&lt;p&gt;Newton, born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, graduated from San Francisco State University in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Cinema, an emphasis in documentary film. After graduation, Katy spent five years working in San Francisco’s documentary film and commercial industry. In 2005, Katy began reporting and producing interactive stories for the Oakland Tribune Newspaper and then the Los Angeles Times. Her work has been the recipient of several awards, including a 2010 Emmy nomination, two consecutive Webby Awards, Overseas Press Club Award, Scripps Howard National Journalism Award, Sigma Delta Chi Award, ONA Knight Foundation Award for Public Service.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Katy is currently located in San Francisco, CA. September 2011, she begins the prestigious John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Alabama’s Homeboys&lt;/em&gt; was recognized by 31st Emmy Awards,  Nominee New Approaches to News &amp; Documentary Programming. The  project received a Webby in the News &amp; Politics: Individual Episode  category.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;I C U&lt;/em&gt; is the winner of the Webby Award in the Reality category for the 13th Annual Webby Awards.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Mexico Under Siege&lt;/em&gt; was honored with the Scripps Howard  National Journalism Award for Web Reporting 2008 and Pictures of the  Year International for Documentary Project of The Year 2008, second  place.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;PROJECT DESCRIPTION&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br/&gt;David Steiner became a symbol for  a generation after he grabbed a mike when RFK was killed and asked, “Is  there a doctor in the house?”  &lt;em&gt;In An Instant &lt;/em&gt;is a short web documentary featuring David Steiner, created for the Los Angeles Times.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;In An Instant&lt;/em&gt; was picked up and telecast in its entirety by  BBC WORLD NEWS INTERNATIONAL on June 5th, 2008 in remembrance of the  40th anniversary of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. It was also  selected as an Official Honoree for the Documentary: Individual Episode  category for The 13th Annual Webby Awards.  It should be noted that &lt;em&gt;In An Instan&lt;/em&gt;t also marks the first time a LAT video story inspired a column one article in the print edition of the paper.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Not Just a Number&lt;/em&gt; was honored with the KNIGHT FOUNDATION  AWARD for Public Service 2007, ONLINE JOURNALISM AWARD – Service  Journalism (small market) 2007, recognized by ADOBE as a “Site of The  Day”, and received NPPA BOP 1st place honors (small market) 2007.&lt;/p&gt;
