Newton, born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, graduated from San Francisco State University in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Cinema, an emphasis in documentary film. After graduation, Katy spent five years working in San Francisco’s documentary film and commercial industry. In 2005, Katy began reporting and producing interactive stories for the Oakland Tribune Newspaper and then the Los Angeles Times. Her work has been the recipient of several awards, including a 2010 Emmy nomination, two consecutive Webby Awards, Overseas Press Club Award, Scripps Howard National Journalism Award, Sigma Delta Chi Award, ONA Knight Foundation Award for Public Service.

Katy is currently located in San Francisco, CA. September 2011, she begins the prestigious John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
David Steiner became a symbol for a generation after he grabbed a mike when RFK was killed and asked, “Is there a doctor in the house?” In An Instant is a short web documentary featuring David Steiner, created for the Los Angeles Times.

In An Instant was picked up and telecast in its entirety by BBC WORLD NEWS INTERNATIONAL on June 5th, 2008 in remembrance of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. It was also selected as an Official Honoree for the Documentary: Individual Episode category for The 13th Annual Webby Awards. It should be noted that In An Instant also marks the first time a LAT video story inspired a column one article in the print edition of the paper.

Craig Flournoy won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 for investigative reporting about racial segregation in East Texas. Flournoy currently teaches at Southern Methodist University. This report is one in a series of papers on best practices for using maps to promote health equity. Commissioned by The Opportunity Agenda. Not Just a Number was honored with the KNIGHT FOUNDATION AWARD for Public Service 2007, ONLINE JOURNALISM AWARD – Service Journalism (small market) 2007, recognized by ADOBE as a “Site of The Day”, and received NPPA BOP 1st place honors (small market) 2007.

An interactive package created for the Oakland Tribune Newspaper, designed to tell the story of a group of kids from Northern California that joined forces with students from a small village in Tanzania, Africa to rebuild a school.

Little By Little was recognized by MACROMEDIA as a “Site of The Day”, received NPPA BOP 1st place honors, and was chosen as an SND.ies finalist 2006.
